Key Points About Rajpurohit Identity (from their site)

Some identity and cultural clarifications they give (important because they distinguish themselves from other groups): (rajpurohitm.com)

  • Rajpurohits view themselves as distinct from the Brahmin Purohits; they call themselves “Rajguru Purohits.” (rajpurohitm.com)

  • They see themselves as an indigenous martial community with strong traditions of valor, land-holding (jagirdari), administration, war strategy, etc. (rajpurohitm.com)

  • They maintain a strict code of vegetarianism, abstinence from meat and intoxicants, etc, even while being a martial community. (rajpurohitm.com)

  • They follow both Rishi gotras (lineage from sages) and clan gotras; in many social customs, clan gotras are more important. Their marriage, social norms are closer to Rajputs in some respects. (rajpurohitm.com)

Rajpurohit Community — Introduction

The Rajpurohit community is an ancient and respected group (different from Brahmin Purohit) from Rajasthan, especially prominent in the Marwar and Godwad regions.

  • Distinct Identity
Unlike traditional Brahmins, Rajpurohits combined roles of warriors, landholders, and advisors. They were attached to royal courts as “Raj Purohits” — guides and counselors to kings — but they were also jagirdars (landholders) and played martial and administrative roles.

  • Historical Role
Rajpurohits advised rulers in matters of dharma and statecraft, conducted important rituals, and defended kingdoms in times of war. Many held large jagirs in Nadol, Jalore, Pali, and surrounding regions.

  • Cultural Roots
The community has preserved its unique traditions, oral history, and lineages (gotras) that are different from other castes. They honor both their spiritual heritage and their warrior-administrative legacy.

  • Modern Era
Today, Rajpurohits are active in education, business, politics, and social work. At the same time, projects like Rajpurohitm.com are working to preserve and share their cultural history for the younger generation.
